Our History
Founded as a church based program in 1956 by individuals and parents of children with developmental delays, the Cranbrook Society for Community Living has delivered a wide array of programs within our region for the past 47 years. The CSCL is a non profit society incorporated in British Columbia in 1972 (#9685); to meet the needs of people with developmental delays within our community. The agency is governed by a volunteer board and is reviewed annually at a general meeting in June.
The CSCL has delivered many programs over the years. In the beginning were educational services to school aged and preschool children. By the late sixties, the agency was involved in delivery of life skills and vocational training for adults. Throughout the seventies and eighties, the Society continued to grow and began to provide residential and vocational opportunities for adults living within the community and those returning to Cranbrook from larger facilities outside of the region.
As the integration of these children and adults into local schools and living arrangements increased, the Society provided community based support to address needs and individual challenges. The CSCL has worked with various levels of government to provide contract based services to enhance the lives of our clients. The Society has also partnered with municipal government and local business to create vocational opportunities within the community, some which have evolved into regular employment.
Currently, the CSCL employs 53 people and provides more than 1.6 million dollars worth of services to the community. In April of 2003 the Society opened the Cranbrook Community Living Center located at 22- 14th Avenue South in Cranbrook. This 10,000 square foot facility enables the CSCL to meet the needs of people with developmental delays of all ages. Enhanced educational, vocational and recreational opportunities make this a very exciting time in our history!
Thank you for past support of our vision, we welcome you to be a part of our future.
